Security analysis of BlackBerry Enterprise Solution successfully completed

Germany – Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology (Fraunhofer Institute SIT) of Germany and Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced the successful completion of an in-depth security analysis performed by Fraunhofer Institute SIT of the BlackBerry® Enterprise Solution for mobile email and data push-services. Fraunhofer Institute SIT confirms the high quality of the security architecture of the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution and the strong data protection services it provides.

Based on the results, the Fraunhofer Institute SIT project team has issued a security certification of the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution for Microsoft® Exchange*. The certificate is based on the functionality, configuration and installation described in certification report 06-104302, which is available at www.sit.fraunhofer.de/testlab/certificates. Fraunhofer Institute SIT also confirmed that no hidden functionality or backdoors were found and that RIM and other third parties do not have access to data within the solution. The Fraunhofer Institute SIT certificate is valid until December 2010.

“With the approved secure key establishment and key exchange protocols in the BlackBerry architecture, the confidentiality and integrity of pushed content is provided and can not be intercepted by any party inside the communication channel,” said Dr. Claudia Eckert, Director of Fraunhofer Institute SIT. “BlackBerry communication provides end-to-end security for the evaluated interactions and services between BlackBerry smartphones and BlackBerry Enterprise Server.”

“RIM continues to set the benchmark for security in mobile communications and the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution is the first push-based solution to undergo this kind of security analysis. We are very pleased with the certification from Fraunhofer Institute SIT, which further reinforces why security conscious organizations and governments around the world have chosen the BlackBerry solution,” said Scott Totzke, Vice President, BlackBerry Security Group at Research In Motion. The BlackBerry Enterprise Solution has also previously received a FIPS 140 validation and a Common Criteria certification in addition to the Fraunhofer Institute SIT certificate.

Background on the security analysis conducted by Fraunhofer Institute SIT on the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution

Research In Motion engaged Fraunhofer Institute SIT to perform a comprehensive in-depth security evaluation of the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution with deep analysis of the solution’s components, interfaces, software platform, environment and protocols. For the project RIM provided Fraunhofer Institute SIT with access to in-depth technical information in order to be able to rigorously review the solution.

The analysis was carried out as three major projects:

  1. The first project analyzed the security of the communication between the major components of the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution – the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, BlackBerry smartphone, and BlackBerry Infrastructure.
  2. The second project analyzed the security of the communication between the individual components of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the processes involved.
  3. The third project focused on the BlackBerry smartphone and the analysis of relevant physical and logical interfaces to the smartphone and its environment such as the Internet. In addition to the communication content and processes, the project team also evaluated the security of standard applications of the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution such as email attachment viewing, access and integration of corporate data sources, and the usage of the PIM applications.

The security analysis assumed extensive security demands for corporate users. Fraunhofer Institute SIT defined the protection goals, developed the attacking scenarios and performed attacks and manipulation attempts in practice. The tests were conducted in a typical reference installation in the Institute’s testlab with expert IT security knowledge and intimate knowledge of the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution based on design documents provided by Research In Motion.

During its evaluation, Fraunhofer Institute SIT identified many areas of strength and some recommendations to further improve the security design and configuration of the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution. Those improvements have already been implemented by RIM into existing products. For the complete evaluation result and the remaining security considerations, please refer to certification report 06-104302, which is part of the certificate.

The certificate is based on the reference configuration (BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange v4.1.6 (bundle 60), BlackBerry® Pearl™ 8110 smartphone (EDGE), Firmware: v4.3.0.104 (Platform 2.6.0.59) and Cryptographic Kernel: v3.8.5.11c).

Motorola WiMAX 802.16e Trial in Vietnam

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced today that the company has deployed its first WiMAX trial network for Vietnam Datacommunications Company (VDC), a member company of the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), the largest Internet service provider (ISP) in Vietnam. The network allows VDC to test next-generation wireless broadband services in major cities of Vietnam and reinforces Motorola’s leadership in deploying commercial and trial networks for WiMAX 802.16e technology worldwide.

The launch of the WiMAX service follows the signing of an agreement between Motorola and VDC to commence a technical and commercial WiMAX trial in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City last year. Under the agreement, Motorola will install WiMAX Diversity Access Points and more than 100 customer premises equipment (CPE) in the nation’s two largest cities.

“Launching the trial network for Vietnam Datacommunications Company is another milestone in Motorola’s long history of leading WiMAX development in the industry,” said Dr. Ray Owen, head of Technology for Asia and general director of Motorola Vietnam. “The WiMAX trial further strengthens our relationship with VDC and offers more choices of broadband access to its subscribers.”

Motorola WiMAX 802.16e technology enables VDC to reach a wider subscriber base in a timely and cost-effective manner, helping it to meet the growing demand for broadband services and other IP services such as VoIP. WiMAX allows more people across the country access to faster Internet connections and other advanced telecom services, contributing to the country’s economic growth.

“Vietnam Datacommunications Company gains competitive advantages by being a pioneer in trialing and launching new WiMAX services, which will allow us to capture market opportunities in the next generation wireless broadband space,“ said Mr. Vu Hoang Lien, CEO, VDC.

Motorola WiMAX solutions include a flexible access point portfolio that provides best-fit networks for operators. The solutions have a small footprint, are easy to deploy and feature technologies such as modem technology which supports advanced antenna algorithms ready for future technologies, helping operators to reduce operating expenditure (OPEX).

Motorola now has 24 contracts for commercial WiMAX networks in 19 countries around the world. For more information about Motorola WiMAX solutions, please visit: http://www.motorola.com/wimax.

Motorola Delivers Innovative Wireless Technologies

The Enterprise Mobility business of Motorola, Inc. Today announced that several schools and universities around the world have deployed Motorola’s innovative wireless technologies to provide connectivity on campus or on the road, enhancing learning experiences for students and helping staff stay productive and secure.

As a global communications leader, Motorola works on advancing the way the world connects. The company’s wireless LAN (WLAN) portfolio is optimized for the education market offering different levels of access security for students, faculty, staff and guests on the same network; self-healing technology that can automatically fix RF coverage problems anywhere on campus; and a comprehensive management suite to help design, deploy, manage and secure a large indoor/outdoor campus-wide network.

By moving to an all-wireless network infrastructure, the Goliad Independent School District in Goliad, Texas and Manipal University in Manipal, India are providing un-tethered Internet access to students and faculty as well as enabling high-speed wireless bridging between multiple campus buildings in a single site or direct connectivity amongst multiple schools in the same school district. The benefits of deploying 802.11n, mesh or an all-wireless enterprise solution for educational environments, ranging from pre-kindergarten through college, are increasing rapidly and creating a global trend for Wi-Fi-enabled schools.

“The all-wireless enterprise solution leverages the full benefits of wireless LAN, enabling full mobility and access to information any time, virtually any place on the school campus,” said Sujai Hajela, vice president and general manager of Enterprise WLAN, Motorola Enterprise Mobility business. “At one-fifth to one-tenth the cost of a wired network, the all-wireless network can instantly save educational institutions millions of dollars per year in leased line costs.”

The students of Goliad Independent School District in Goliad, Texas, are now able to access the Internet from the classroom to the parking lot. Victoria Communication Services, a Motorola value-added reseller and a member of Motorola’s five-star PartnerSelect partner program, customized the WLAN deployment to provide full coverage in all of the district’s schools.

“Goliad school district’s IT staff has been very progressive providing laptops to students to help them with their studies and by providing widespread Wi-Fi access,” said Jennifer Hartman, owner of Victoria Communication Services. “Motorola’s end-to-end WLAN solutions deliver the reliable, scalable, high performance connectivity that provides peace of mind to any IT director of a budget-strapped school district.”

Across the globe, Manipal University in Manipal, India, has deployed Motorola’s WLAN technology for indoor access and mesh for outdoors to connect more than 20 of its colleges. D-VoiS, a leading Indian Internet service provider, recommended the end-to-end, fully managed wireless network from Motorola, which also integrated Motorola’s complementary point-to-point and point-to-multipoint wireless bridging technologies.

“Reliability, performance and improved manageability that comes with deploying a single-vendor system was a factor in assessing the indoor and outdoor needs of the network,” said Ramesh Sathya of D-VoiS. “Motorola has the most comprehensive and proven wireless portfolio in the market, which made it the clear choice for the Manipal deployment.”

In addition to providing schools and universities with comprehensive wireless networking solutions, Motorola also offers proven mobile communications tools like Good Mobile Messaging to enable teachers and staff to stay connected with their key stakeholders when off campus.

The Houston County Board of Education in Georgia selected Good Mobile Messaging to provide email, calendaring, and contacts to its employees. When comparing different mobile messaging solutions, security and management were important factors. Since employees take their smartphones wherever they travel, devices can be lost or misplaced, putting confidential data at risk.

“In our search for the best mobile messaging solution, we considered our requirements for security, manageability, and the needs of our end users,” said Doug McDowell, webmaster and Good administrator, Houston County Board of Education. “Good was the only solution that didn’t require any trade-offs. Our IT managers are confident in the level of security and our users can stay productive wherever their jobs take them. We’ve had Good running for more than a year and are confident we made the right choice for our organization.”

Good provides end-to-end security for data in transit as well as data stored on employee devices. Good’s server is deployed behind the enterprise firewall so security is not compromised with having to open new ports. IT can even remotely lock down hardware components, including cameras, Bluetooth®, and IR ports as well as smartphone applications like browser and games. New temporary passwords can be pushed to the handheld and lost or stolen devices can be remotely erased.

“Motorola’s Good Technology Group is making great strides in the education market,” said Neil Hooper, vice president of global sales of Motorola Good Technology Group. “Good understands that every minute counts for staff members, and real time accuracy drives excellence. The ability to stay on top of emails, contacts and meetings is critical to success, since employees have so many stakeholders.”

Other school districts that have recently selected Good Mobile Messaging from Motorola include Catawba County Schools, Liberty Public School District, Cleveland Metropolitan School District and San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools. Recently announced wireless-enabled schools featuring Motorola WLAN technology include Carnegie Mellon University, San Marino Unified School District and Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications.
